Education in Australia
Australia has become the third most sought of choice for an education destination in the English-speaking world. There are more than 200,000 foreign students in Australian institutions across all education sectors.
Australian Education generally follows the three-tier model:
- Primary (Grade 1 to 6)
- Secondary,(Grade 7 to 12)
- Tertiary, (Colleges, Universities, or TAFE (Technical and Further Education Colleges).
It is primarily the responsibility of states and territories. Education is compulsory up to an age specified by legislation, which is generally from 15 to 17 years of age. The main subjects in Australian schools include English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Arts, Health and Physical Education. The academic year in Australia generally runs from late January to mid-December for primary and secondary schools and TAFE colleges, and from late February until mid-November for universities.
The states in Australia have different names for their final High School graduation which are as follows:
-Australian Capital Territory: ACT Year 12 Certificate
-New South Wales: Higher School Certificate (HSC)
-Northern Territories: Senior Secondary Studies Certificate
-Queensland: Queensland Senior Certificate (QSC)
-South Australia: South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE)
-Tasmania: Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
-Victoria: Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)
-Western Australia: Certificate of Secondary Education

Business colleges in Australia usually have both certificate and diploma courses. Certificate courses generally run over a period from 12 to 30 weeks while diploma courses have a longer duration and run from 30- 40 weeks. For foreign students, some colleges even have the provision of ‘work permit’ and scholarships that would help students to finance their studies.
